AHH! You Mean I’m Not Really Married?

February 2nd, 2010

You’ve been asking your kids for years to give you a trip to Europe for Christmas. You don’t need any more knickknacks, gift certificates, etc.  And this year they finally did!  Now you have to get your passport.

I had an extremely excited woman call to get a copy of her marriage certificate from 1964.  Guess what?  We discovered it didn’t exist.  We found the marriage application that had been filled out, but there was no certificate. It seems the minister never mailed the return back in to the office.

So what do you do if you don’t have your marriage certificate?  You will need to contact the Office of Vital Statistics main office in Dover.  They can issue a delayed certificate.  They will use a letter provided by us and some other documents to issue the certificate. The lady got her marriage certificate and had a wonderful time in Europe.

LOL. After 2 marriages, I keep my certificate locked safely up in my firesafe.
My problem was when we wanted to take a vacation, needed a copy of my birth certificate and the great County of my Birth didn’t want to cooperate in a timely manner!

We did marry in Europe right after Christmas, but it was too much trouble to get all the documents from Europe certified to be recognized here in USA, so we had another ceremony locally in our home town, problem solved. Better twice than never.

So if in doubt, get the right documents in both countries.
    Christmas Julie

My situation was we both came from the same country but we were were married here in the Middle East. But it seems our Government does not recognize that marriage because certificate was not stamp by our embassy. But at that time our Government does not have embassy here. I guess we should get married again in our country on our 25th anniversary.

Nice. I wonder if my mom has one as well. She is planning to get a passport for her first ever trip out of the country and up to now I haven’t heard back from her application. Reading this article made me think of her.

Lesson in this real story is to make sure you have an authentic marriage certificate. The story is kind of funny. But the important this is even without any marriage certificate, they still managed to be together. That’s sweet!!
